Green Sporting Projects and Area Development
Sports and entertainment facilities are some of the highest-profile buildings in any community. Professional sports, enjoyed by more than 1 million Minneapolis Saint Paul metro area visitors every year, are going green. Sports teams from coast to coast are implementing major environmental practices, including reducing electricity expenditures, holding carbon neutral games and managing waste. Minneapolis Saint Paul is undergoing a sports facility boom. Many green projects are on the table:
- Developers for the Minnesota Twins baseball stadium is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), certification, making it one of the first baseball stadiums in the country to do so
- Minnesota Gophers football stadium will be the first Division 1 school to LEED certify its stadium
- Target Center is considering a green roof
- Xcel Energy Center is upgrading its green practices for the Republican National Convention
- Developers (Anxon) for downtown Minneapolis's first "green" office building, at 1016 Marquette Avenue, are pursuing the highest level of LEED certification (Platinum). The frame would use recycled concrete, and the building would use solar energy, have a green roof, an underground stormwater tank, high-efficiency fluorescent lighting with daylight and motion sensors and more.
