Progressive City

With the 2nd-largest per-capita GLBT population in the U.S. (and 3rd largest concentration of same-sex couples), Minneapolis is a leader in extending gay rights to its citizens. Since passing its first protection policies more than 30 years ago, the city has enjoyed some of the strongest GLBT rights in the country.

  • 1974: The city council amended an ordinance to cover discrimination based on sexual preference
  • Since 1991: Same-sex couples in Minneapolis can register as domestic partners at City Hall
  • 1993: The Human Rights Amendment passed, barring discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
  • 2002: Minneapolis enacted the Equal Benefits Ordinance that required certain contractors with the city to offer domestic partner benefits

Resources for Change

Minneapolis is home to several high-profile GLBT organizations that are leaders in shaping the GLBT community. Rainbow Families and OutFront Minnesota continually represent GLBT rights at the Minnesota legislature. The city is host to the one of the largest free Pride celebrations in the country and a number of major events benefiting AIDS research. Other GLBT resources in the Minneapolis area include:

A Creative Community

Minneapolis is a highly creative place, with 200 advertising agencies, 100 public relations firms and 250 direct marketing firms, all right here. A high number of Minnesota businesses do cutting-edge work—ground-breaking inventions, such as the pacemaker and the heart-lung machine, originated at the University of Minnesota. After working hard, we play hard in the city's vibrant restaurant, bar and club scene. Stop into one of 57 museums or see a show—Minneapolis has more theater seats per capita than any city outside New York.
